NEWSLETTER February 2003:

Happy Valentines Day! Although candy has nothing to do with sewing, I'm sure we'll all be getting some boxes of "assorted" chocolates this Friday. If you're like me, there are some of the chocolates I love and others I dislike with a passion, but the problem is that you don't know which is which unless you bite into the candy. Well, I've recently run across a "secret code" to deciphering what kind of chocolate each is that is followed by most candy manufacturers.

First, look at the "shape" of the chocolate. Chocolate-covered nuts are in the shape of the nut. If it's square, it's a caramel. Nougats are oblong, and creams are dome-shaped. Now look at the swirl of chocolate on top of the creams. If it's shaped like a "V", you have vanilla; "O" means orange; and "B" indicates butter flavor.

Now you can easily decipher which is which, eat the kinds you  like and pass along the rest to whoever else wants to get into "your" candy!

*** Speaking of chocolate, did you know that chocolate stains on washable clothing can be easily removed by saturating the stains with carbonated water and then laundering the garments in the usual manner? With all the Valentine candy around, you may get an opportunity to try this stain removal tip.

*** One of our customers has passed along a fantastic "tip" to make spring cleaning (and cleaning any time of the year) much easier and faster. Take an old terrycloth towel that is no longer being used and cut a strip the length of the towel and 2 1/2 inches wide. Sew the strip with 1/4" seams and turn right side out. This strip easily slides onto a yardstick, which can be used to slide under the refrigerator, washer and dryer for quick cleaning. The strip can then be thrown into the washer to clean and save for the next time. That same old towel can be cut into the shape of your dust mop, and  adding about 4 inches all around. Turn under a hem and run elastic through it. Slip the terry cloth "cover" over the dust mop and use that for getting the spider webs from the corners in the garage, or reaching areas that are hard to get to. And as before, when finished, throw the cover into the washer to clean for the next time.

*** If you're doing some spring sewing projects for children and are going to use trims and appliques, they will be much easier to sew if you will use a glue stick on them first. Rub the glue on the trim or applique and position it on the garment - this eliminates the need for pinning or basting.

*** Try making a "patchwork skirt" or "patchwork slacks" out of your fabric scraps. Cut your skirt or slacks pattern our of muslin, and sew in the darts (if needed). Next arrange your fabric scraps to cover the muslin pieces (begin at the top and pin the scraps as you go, overlapping them as you work your way to the bottom). When the muslin pieces are covered with fabric scraps, take it to the sewing machine and do a satin stitch all around each piece, securing it to the muslin. After doing the satin stitch around all the fabric pieces on the muslin pattern piece, sew the slacks or skirt pieces together. Add the zipper, waist band and button and button hole. Children love these "patchwork" garments! If your child is hard to fit, but would love to have a "patchwork" skirt, you would be able to get a perfect fit for her by using her own "specific" measurements to make the pattern -- try the FREE 6-gore skirt pattern and see the youngster's eyes light up when you have a patchwork skirt that fits PERFECTLY!

One suggestion, however, don't "mix and match" the types of fabrics for the patchwork - for example, don't use some cotton, some flannel, some knit, some wool, etc. Use scraps from the same "type" of fabric; all cotton scraps or all knit fabrics, etc., as they will "wash" differently and some may shrink while other fabrics won't shrink.
